It’s been a tough week for a lot of people. The events unfolding in the US, in Canada and around the world in response to the murder of George Floyd have rattled us all to the core. It seems perhaps frivolous to ponder matters of art and its practice in the face of such things. Nonetheless, we persist with the things that move us, inspire us and help us to steady our own personal ship. Meditation continues to be one such anchor. The daily practice of it: Cue, Routine, Reward, seems to provide me with hope and purpose.
And beginning in this past week, I began to return to practice. Slowly but surely. I started the first day with 5 minutes of breathing. The next day was a little more breathing and a few vocal function exercises, growing the amount of time each day incrementally. No huge promise to fulfill, no specific goal, just putting in the time, a little more each day. Today I got up to 40 minutes, and that seems to be enough. No repertoire at this point, just playfully exploring my voice and exercising and stretching it. Purely for the experience. No heroism here, just trying to create a positive habit. Steady as she goes, with curiosity.
